You know that the mainstream tourist industry isn't pushing a particular country when you can't find the language in the multi-lingual European phrase book. And what language do you speak in Croatia?, I ask the friendly information helper in Zagreb. Croatian she replies.

That simple eh?

You can also tell, when all the trains in Italy going to Italian destinations are full, yet getting a ride on the Budapest Special is as easy as falling off a log, or in this case, a web log.

For a large part of my life, I has this impression that people in the old Eastern Bloc countries of which Croatia as part, were dour people who dressed in grey and went round with sour looking faces. I suppose that came with working 15 hours a day in a salt mine or building nuclear weapons guarded by secret service agents packing kaleshnakovs or the 1970's equivalent whilst taking notes on the performance of each of the workers.

While that might well have been the case then, (it must have been, our government told us so), it is certainly not the case now. Fashion retailing seems to be the main industry, and by what is to be seen on the Zagreb city streets, it is a great success story. Fashion and shoe shops line the streets with neither nuclear contaminated overalls nor salt encrusted work boots in sight.

The young people are right into fashion with many dressed to the nines whilst sipping a drink in the many cafes and pubs that line the city streets. This is especially true in Upper Town where there are dozens of such establishments with patrons enjoying the alfresco atmosphere adjacent to historic buildings.

Whilst the accommodation was extremely expensive for what you get, the food is relatively cheap - and good, if what we experienced is indicative of all eating establishments. Ironically, one of the meals was Indian, of the sun continent variety. One of the best Indian meals I have ever had, with a few drinks thrown in, all for under 200 kone or under $AU50 for my wife, Brenda and I. Our lunch today was more Croatian food - grilled veal with Croatian salad, bread, chips (not Croatian, I know) and mineral water - all for 99 kone. We couldn't eat another thing, well, not for another half hour at least.

Admittedly, this was after Brenda insisted on buying half a kilo of strawberries, when I thought half of that would suffice. She then forced me to eat the bloody things. And this was not to mention the apple that each of us had purchased from the very same produce market that the aforementioned strawberries were purchased and duly eaten.

Good food aside, the other things that struck me about Croatia was the friendliness of the people (even the immigration officials !!) and the fact that most of them spoke English.

And I thought I was going to have to make myself understood by people who had just been working 15 hours in a salt mine. I am very glad that was not the case. Our only regret was that our schedule only allowed for a single day visit. I'm sure I could have found a salt mine, given the time.

If you need to visit Australia on business, even for a very short period of time, you will need to apply for an Australian visa. This article gives some basic details of the three types of business visa available.

There are three types of visa available for business visits to Australia. It should be noted that a business visit is NOT the same as working in the context of applying for an Australian visa.

The first is a Short Stay Business Visa which is suitable for a visit of less than three months. This will cover a business person for normal business meetings, negotiations and conferences and may be applied for through their chosen airline or via the internet. This is a Business Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). Alternatively, applications may be made in writing.

The second type of business visa is a Sponsored Business Visitor (short stay) Visa. In order to quality for this type of visa, a business person will need to be sponsored by a member of an Australian parliament, an authorised government agency, local mayor or other authorised organisation and the sponsor will need to guarantee that their visitor will abide by all the visa conditions including that which specifies the date by which they must leave the country.

The third business visa is a Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa. To apply for one of these, an applicant must have an approved employer as a sponsor who has an eligible position available. The employer can be an Australian or overseas company and the employee must be a foreign national with the applicable skills to fill the position. The eligible position must have been approved as a skilled occupation suitable for this program, must be full time and of a minimum salary as well as meeting various Australian laws and award requirements.

However, before the employee can apply for a visa, the employer will need to apply to be a sponsor of overseas employees and nominate the job vacancies to be filled. The nomination period will be 12 months or until all the vacancies are filled, whichever is the shorter. The sponsorship will be for a period of 2 years and the visa period may be anything from 3 months to 4 years. However, if the employee wishes to change employment, he will need to find a new approved sponsor with an eligible position and re-apply for a visa.

The internet is a marvelous tool for finding vacation properties. But the uninitiated may not realize that there are many types of rental property provider out there, and they dont all offer equal levels of value and service.

The first type is the general vacation rental website. There are many of these available, and they are perhaps most suitable when you havent decided where you want to go. You can browse these sites for ideas on where to go and the larger sites may well have a reasonable choice of homes in certain destinations, particularly the most popular ones. These homes may be advertised by the individual owner, or by companies who manage multiple rental properties.

However, these sites have their limitations. You will rarely find any information about each destination, since these sites typically cover the globe, albeit with varying levels of inventory available in any one resort or location. Also, the site is really nothing but an advertising venue; it takes no responsibility for the accuracy of any of the information posted by the owners who use it, and you will have no comeback to the operator of the website if it turns out that the property is misrepresented, is not available when you turn up even though you have paid or, in the worst but by no means unknown case, does not even exist.

The second type of site is often advertised as by owner. These sites may be global, or they may be destination-specific. Such sites frequently claim that by dealing directly with owners they are cutting out the middleman and saving you money, and in certain areas owners who market their properties directly can escape some types of tax. However, these sites also have drawbacks. As with global vacation rental sites, by owner sites provide no guarantees about your holiday; they are just a way of putting you in touch with the owner. Furthermore, the owner is not worried about the credibility and reputation of the site as a whole; their main concern is to promote their own property. Finally, if the property becomes unavailable for any reason, the owner may be restricted in their ability to provide an alternative. So be cautious with these sites.

The third type of site belongs to a property manager with an inventory of homes in a individual destination. He does not usually own the homes but rents them out on behalf of the owners. He does not mind which home you choose, so his incentive is only to find the property most suitable for your group. If, exceptionally, your property becomes unavailable for your dates, he will be able to find you an alternative from other properties he manages. Finally he will have consistent quality systems in place to ensure that your place is in perfect condition for your stay. So if you want to be sure of the quality of your vacation rental, choose a property management company which specializes in the resort of your choice.

30. Oregon State Hospital, an insane asylum, was built in SE Portland in 1862. The street it was built on was named Asylum Street. People protested the name. So the street was later renamed after one of the hospital's administrators. Asylum Street was later renamed Hawthorne Street, a very popular and thriving district today.

The birds listed here are the most common ones you MIGHT find in Arkansas throughout the entire year. I've seen hundreds of brown pelicans here plumped down in one spot, but you aren't likely to see brown pelicans here because that was a one day event and they were gone when I came back in less than an hour. I don't know how they got here and I don't know why they came.

The list is in alphabetical order instead of being arranged by groups. Remember that birds vary by habitat. For example: Ducks will always be found near water. The more water there is, the more ducks there might be. Geese prefer to graze AND have water nearby. They are more likely to be found in open fields, preferably GRAIN fields. In Arkansas you never really know what kind of habitat you'll see in the next ten miles. Will it be wetland, open field, plain, hill, mountain, valley, stream, river, pond, lake or meadow. That's good. You won't get bored in Arkansas.

When going camping, there are quite a bit of absolutely essential supplies that have to be taken along. The type and quantity of supplies required depends on the nature of the camping trip and the duration.

Tents are the extremely essential as places that provide sleep and shelter.

Sleeping bags are necessary, especially since it can get quite cold out in the wild. A sleeping pad or air mattress to place under your sleeping bag for cushioning purposes is also necessary.

If the place where the camp site is being set up prohibits campfires, then a portable stove to prepare food is necessary.

A flashlight (preferably with extra batteries) is also a must. Hatchets, saw, or axe to cut down wood either for a campfire (if they are permitted) or for other minor construction or repair purposes. Rope is also essential since it can be very useful.

Other essential camping equipment can mostly be brought from home. These include dishes, pots, pans, utensils, etc.

For serious backpackers and wilderness campers, the list given above is pretty much a basic one.

Here are some other absolute essentials to be brought on a camping trip:

A map in a watertight case, a compass (a GPS system will be even better), extra clothing, extra food and water, a first aid kit, and a knife.

Other supplies include matches (also in a water-tight container), a fire starter, sunglass and sunscreen (to protect your eyes and skin respectively), a method of water treatment (like a water filter, for example), a food storage device (for places where bears are common, a bear canister is an absolute must) and a whistle.

The whistle can be used in situations where you get stuck and wish to call out to somebody for help. The whistle will almost always last a lot longer than your vocal cords will.

All the above mentioned supplies will be quite useless if they are not used properly. The most essential of all camping supplies is knowledge and experience.

Puerto Pollensa has been a tourist destination since the 1920's so hotels on the sea front are not the concrete blocks that can be found in most other towns on the island. The town is little more than an hours drive from Palma and the Son Sant Joan International airport and is popular with families and middle aged couples looking for something more than the popular south coast resorts. You can find walks into the mountains where views back over the bay are stunning.

Alcudia on the north coast is also an easy drive from Palma. The original old town of Alcudia is just two miles inland and well worth a visit. Parts of the town date back to around 1300 and in the 2nd century the Romans made Alcudia the capital of the island. The clean sand of Alcudia Bay and variety of water sports make the town popular with families who have young children.

Should you want to escape even the quiet resorts of Mallorca then explore some of the beaches that are off the beaten track; Es Trenc is one of the best unspoilt beaches in Mallorca with no hotels just pine forests, the occasional wooden beach bar, miles of white sand and gorgeous turquoise water.

The best way to get around the island is by car or bike. Car hire in Mallorca is made simple with car hire companies based in Palma and at the Son Sant Joan International airport. If you'd rather use public transport, a regular bus service connects the airport with Palma, where you can get buses to the rest of the island.

With unattractive resort developments spoiling much of the coast it is refreshing to see some of the islands natural beauty that hasnt yet been lost to concrete.
